HPH Newsletter 12/17/20

A few exciting items to report:

  • HPH will be hosting a virtual Tết New Year performance by our kids for our community on February 11th. Our amazing VDLI Vietnamese teachers are going to start working with their classes on different learning activities/performances that will be pre-recorded. There will be no school-sponsored in-person gatherings for performance preparation or celebration. HPH is working closely with the teachers to help support them and will be responsible for the logistics and production of the video.
  • The Rose City Park PTO is sponsoring a reading event, Read for the Roses, starting in January. For the first month of this event, HPH is excited to collaborate with the PTO to bring a focus on Vietnamese-American authors and Vietnamese language and stories.
  • On Friday, December 18, we will be handing out food boxes with seven days’ worth of meals. Families who are signed up for meal delivery will also receive the food boxes. This will happen during our regular meal distribution window, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., at the 35 schools sites we use for meal service while we are in distance learning (see sites and map).

Some additional Tết information:

Will students who don’t have Vietnamese áo dai (clothing) have access to them?

Yes, the school has áo dai, contact your teachers and we will be coordinating student pick up of áo dai for the Tết recordings as needed. (Or parents can order from Amazon).

When will the virtual Tết be presented?

Our current plan is to host a school-wide virtual assembly on Friday February 12 to show the pre-recorded Tết performance video. We then hope to post the video to the Portland Public Schools and HPH websites for further viewing.

What about student privacy/images?

Parents will need to sign a media exception form if they don’t want their children to be recorded and shown in the final video. If parents sign the waiver, then their children will not be included or shown in the video. This media form will be sent by the teacher.

How long will the video be?

We are aiming for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, with performances by each grade of approximately 5 to 7 minutes.

What may student performances include?

The teachers are developing ideas, but performances may include songs, art collages, student written Vietnamese stories, fashion show of áo dai, etc.

HPH is grateful to teachers, administrators, office staff, volunteers, and community support.  We are especially grateful  to have the opportunity to serve our VDL students. During this winter break, we wish you a healthy, safe and loving holiday season. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at HoiPhuHuynh.VDLI@gmail.com.
