Dear VDLI Families,
The sun is out, the flowers are blooming, spring is here. It reminds us of renewal and growth — a time to plant the seeds of what we hope to see next. Within Rose City Park Elementary school and our Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion program, HPH has seen our community come together in incredible ways. At the same time, we know there are many more people who are struggling during this time, and we are committed to doing all we can to help weather this crisis. Times like this make it clear that we are all in this together and we are all focusing on our students and families.
Our teachers are working so hard on providing home based distance learning and on connecting with students/families with the guidance of Portland Public Schools and the Oregon Department of Education. Our teachers are our heroes because they too face challenges as the rest of us, but they are pushing through to teach our children. We thank them!
In this week newsletter, we would like to stress the importance of using the PPS Student and Parent Portal as an entry point for all students and parents for accessing Home Base Distance Learning (PPS HD) in PPS. As HPH continues to support families in signing into PPS HD’s online learning, we have been working with Mr. Michael Bacon, Director of Dual Language Immersion to improve its accessibility and its format. Thank you Mr. Bacon and special gratitude to Miss Rose Vu, our VDL Teacher on Special Assignment who has created these weekly learning activities. This is amazing work!

If you would like to access the PPS Student and Parent Portal but are having difficulties, please contact Mr. Phú Dao, at (971) 517-4486. Mr. Dao is our Rose City Park/HPH Board Equity trainer and HPH 1st grade parent volunteer.
We would also like to share with you our Kindergarten parent survey that we sent out a couple weeks ago regarding our HPH2 (Google Hangout Meet) teacher/parent support program:
- 65 % responded (25 of 38) THANK YOU!!! We thank you very much.
- 85% benefited from seeing their teachers, their friends and learning with the class (15% benefit from one of the choices)
- HPH communication support – 72% Excellent, 30% Good, 8% Average
- 92% received our weekly bilingual newsletter
Special thanks to the K parent volunteers to make the google hangout successful with 100% of student participation with direct instruction from their teachers.
Last but not least, we are changing our weekly bilingual newsletter to a bimonthly bilingual newsletter. We had hoped to fill the communication gap when schools closed their doors six weeks ago. We understand that you are now being bombarded with information and emails and we want to be respectful of your time.
